Policies

ELIGIBILITY

  • The applicant institution must be a nonprofit, charitable institution, such as a university, hospital or research organization. Applications are accepted from institutions worldwide.

  • The Principal Investigator can be a postdoctoral fellow or someone with a faculty or equivalent appointment at the institution. There can be only one Principal Investigator for each proposal.

BUDGET

  • Funding can be requested for up to two years, but grants generally are funded only one year at a time. Funding for a second year is based upon a satisfactory Continuation Application (see “Continuation Funding” below), which will undergo peer review.

  • Budgets should be appropriate for the project’s scope of work and absolute needs. All necessary costs for conduct of the study can be budgeted, including items such as personnel, supplies, equipment, publications costs and travel. There is no fixed upper or lower limit of funding, but keep in mind that we are a small foundation with limited funds. To see the range of funding we have awarded, see "Grant Funding Awarded Annually" in the "Program Statistics" section of our website.

  • Travel costs to attend the Annual BMRP Investigator Meeting must be budgeted (see “Meetings”). Funds awarded for travel and related costs to attend the BMRP Investigator Meeting are restricted and cannot be used for any other purpose without prior BMRP approval. Travel to attend other scientific meetings is not allowed. Other travel that is necessary to conduct the study must be fully justified and itemized separately from the BMRP Investigator Meeting costs. Only economy airfare is allowable.

  • The maximum indirect costs/overhead that can be requested is 10% based upon total direct costs. Once a grant is awarded, funds cannot be transferred out of direct costs to cover indirect or overhead costs even if less than the maximum allowed indirect costs were requested.

  • Except as indicated above, all other rebudgeting to cover the necessary and reasonable costs of the research project is allowable without prior BMRP approval.

  • If you have a particular project and budget in mind and wish clarification regarding whether it is appropriate, please contact us.

CONTINUATION FUNDING

  • A primary purpose of BMRP grants is to facilitate innovative IBD research to enable the Principal Investigator to obtain longer-term funding from other agencies. The crucial experiments that are necessary to validate the hypothesis should be done as early as possible in year one. If your hypothesis is confirmed by your preliminary data, we would expect you to apply for other longer-term funding during year one. Continuation support is possible if you made good progress and can document the need for a second year from the BMRP in order to strengthen your chances for other funding.

  • Continuation application instructions and forms will be provided to current grantees upon request from the BMRP. The target deadline for a continuation application is three months before the end of the first funded period. It generally takes about two months to complete the peer review process and the application may need revisions. However, it is acceptable for the continuation application to be submitted after the target deadline if more time is needed to demonstrate adequate progress. A no cost time extension of the project also is possible by written request. Please note that a late submission, even if funded, could result in a temporary lapse in funding.

  • If you receive a continuation award, we will extend the grant period, add the funding to the first year and change the due date for the final financial report. Funds for years one and two should be combined and you can continue to use any budgetary surplus from year one. We do NOT want to receive an expenditure report at the end of year one if you receive continuation funding.

NO COST TIME EXTENSION

To obtain a no cost time extension, a letter of request should be submitted to the BMRP by the Principal Investigator prior to the end of the grant period. The letter can be submitted electronically and should include the following information:

  • the anticipated balance remaining at the end of the currently funded period;
  • the number of additional months needed; and
  • a justification for the extension.

FINAL REPORTS AND PUBLICATIONS

1.    A final technical progress report is due to the BMRP three months after the end of the grant period. The final technical progress report should be submitted electronically and include the following:
     (a)    summary of project aims;
     (b)    accomplishments toward meeting those aims;
     (c)    a list of significant results (positive or negative);
     (d)    a list of publications resulting from the grant. Send all pre-prints of manuscripts electronically as soon as they are accepted for
              publication and all reprints of the final published articles that have not previously been sent to the BMRP. All publications resulting in
              whole or in part from this grant are to acknowledge receipt of funding from the Broad Medical Research Program of The Broad
              Foundation.
     (e)    disclosure and description of any patents received or pending that have resulted in whole or in part from the BMRP supported project;
     (f)    a list of applications submitted to other granting agencies to continue work on this project, including the outcome of those proposals.
             Provide the following information:
             1)    name of the funding agency.
             2)    funding status (e.g., pending, received or not funded).
             3)    type of grant requested (e.g., research grant, fellowship, career award).
             4)    total amount requested.
             5)    If funded by another agency, please also include:
                     i)    total amount awarded (direct plus indirect) for the entire project period
                     ii)    number of years of support received
                     iii)    year in which funding began. If no applications have been submitted, please indicate why and describe plans for requesting
                             continued funding of this project from other agencies.
     (g)    a lay summary of the progress report (not to exceed one page), written in non-scientific terms.

The BMRP will continue to follow up with Principal Investigators for several years after the conclusion of funding. This is extremely important in order to document the BMRP’s success in funding the research. Principal Investigators should e-mail to us all reprints of publications resulting in whole or in part from BMRP grants, disclose resulting patents and inform us of any grants received from other sources for their BMRP-supported project.

2.    A printed and signed final financial report is to be submitted by the institutional accounting office within three months after the end of the grant period and must contain the combined expenditures for the entire period of the grant. The BMRP will provide the financial report form to the grantee institution. If there are more than $100 U.S. in grant funds remaining that are not expended or committed within the grant period (or authorized extension thereof), these are to be returned to the BMRP along with the final financial report. If the remaining balance is $100 U.S. or less, it is to be retained by the grantee institution for use by the Principal Investigator in support of his/her research.
